The Art Gallery at the island of Sandoy

Mr Sofus Olsen, born in the little, pictoresque village of Sandoy was a dedicated art lover and connaiseur. Sofus Olsen was living in Torshavn, working in the bank industry and was throughout his life a vivid collector of faroese art. He decided in his later years to build an art gallery at Sandoy to accomodate his considerable collection.

The Gallery, designed by the famous architect  Palle Gregoriussen, is a timber building with two floors each 120 m2. The work was commenced in July 2005 and was completed on the 10th December same year on Mr Sofus Olsens 92th birthday. Mr Olsen dedicated the Gallery – funded by himself – and the art collection to the Municipality of Sandoy. A noble gesture and a suitable memory of the now late Sofus Olsen.

The Gallery is very well received and has become a boost for the local tourist industry.
